The Spitfire was reborn through the efforts of an Imperial Sister of
Battle, who had been compiling a history of the Emperor's ancestry.
When she showed images of the machines of antiquity to the Superiors of
their Order, the classical flyer, with the angelic curvatures of its
wings and tail surfaces--and its legendary agility--appealed to them
immediately as just the right air support vehicle for their mission.
An
exhaustive search of Pre-Imperial records turned up schematics and
aerodynamic data critical to the machine's construction. The only
conceit to modernity was the necessity of current type powerplants and
weaponry. Spitfires are the sole responsibility of the Lorettine
Orders, and are usually deployed in teams of two.

[These stats might work for just about any World War Two fighter and
even many post-WW2 ones. I chose the Spitfire first because I had a
model of one handy in close to WH40K size--had I chosen the Hawker
Typhoon, I would have max'ed out the armor (+80 instead of +35), made
the Ripper Guns Long-Barrelled (for an additional 9 points total), and
traded the bombs for a pair of Missile Launchers (+50 points total). I
was wondering whether to add a Souped-Up Engine, but I see that they
don't apply to Flyers.]

[Historical/Cultural note: Notre Dame Loretto is the patron saint of
aviators--and the real-life Lorettine Order is an Order founded by
English Nuns, as a feminine parallel to the Jesuits.]
